8th Grade Advanced Journalism, aka Yearbook
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Advanced Journalism, also referred to as Yearbook, is a yearlong course. This course will give students an introduction to publishing, photography, graphic design, and layout. Students will produce the school Yearbook that will be circulated throughout Barton MS. We will work with writing for different formats, photography, reporting and advanced technology applications. Students will report on Barton news and will work throughout the year to create their Yearbook. Students will be expected (as needed) to attend athletic events, competitions, and Barton related activities in order to film, photograph and report for the Yearbook.

Class attendance is essential to be successful in this class. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to obtain any make-up work. Make-up work can be obtained on the back wall calendar, from the class website, or from the teacher. Please call or email me if you have any questions about missed work. Make-up work can be completed before or after school, or during lunch with special arrangements. The computer lab will be open before school at 7:45 or after school until 4pm. A pass must be obtained from the instructor to be in the halls before school or during lunch.
CLASS WORK
Students must turn in ALL work. A student may be assigned ICU in order to finish work if necessary. If more time is needed, special arrangements need to be made with the instructor before the assigned due date.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & CLASSROOM RULES
Each student is given the privilege to use the school’s computers. Students will be expected to care for their assigned computer for the semester. Failure to comply with lab and school rules will result in loss of privilege to use the computers.

Grading Policy
I. Grading procedures for each six week period: Exams and Major projects, 60%:
Students may have up to two per six weeks. Many major grades will be project based learning.
II. Daily Work, Homework, or other assignments count 40%: Up to six per grading period.
A. Quizzes: occasional quizzes to gauge students understanding before moving forward on more complex concepts.
B. Daily Grades: As assigned. These will be graded electronically and kept in student's electronic portfolio.
C. Warm-ups: will be checked randomly along with planner.
III. Lab Rules:
No food, drinks, or candy is allowed in the computer lab. No internet surfing, no inappropriate web material. No unapproved games. Students in violation will be kicked off the computers for one week and all assignments must be completed by hand. Continued offenders will be kicked off the computer indefinitely.
IV. Progress Reports
Students will be given progress reports three weeks into each six weeks grading period. Parents can also monitor grades via the Hays CISD website and the parent portal. Student's grades will posted weekly by their ID number. Students are to keep all returned materials in their electronic portfolio.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
- Enter the lab quietly and go directly to your assigned workstation.
- Log In, navigate to the Daily Agenda, and begin the daily “Warm-Up” assignment
- At the end of class—UPON THE TEACHER’S INSTRUCTION—log off your computer, return materials where you got them from, push in your chair, and WAIT QUIETLY for the teacher to dismiss you from class.
