7th and 8th Grade Broadcast Media
COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this one-semester course, students will investigate techniques of video production from pre production - planning, to production - videotaping, and post production - editing. Students will learn the concepts and terminology of film production and the power of the media through journalism as they study different areas of filmmaking such as PSA’s (Public Service Announcements), commercials, news segments, and magazine format stories and documentaries. There will be hands on training in video production skills including scripting, shot set-up, interview techniques, lighting, sound, music, and editing. The fundamentals and safety of operating a camcorder, tripod, and editing equipment will be stressed. The course will culminate in an exhibition of original student video projects.

ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES

Class attendance is essential to be successful in this class. If student is absent, it is their responsibility to obtain any make-up work. Make-up work can be obtained on the back wall calendar, from the class website, or from the teacher. One-day, for each day missed will be suggested for make-up work. Please call or email me if you have any questions about missed work. Make-up work can be done before or after school, or during lunch with special arrangements. Please see me before or after class to schedule a time for make-up work. The computer lab will be open before school at 7:45 or after school until 4pm. A pass must be obtained from the instructor to be in the halls before school or during lunch.
CLASS WORK
Students must turn in ALL work. Students may be assigned ICU until work is completed. If more time is needed, special arrangements need to be made with the instructor before the assigned due date.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & CLASSROOM RULES
Each student is given the privilege to use the school’s computers. Students will be expected to care for their assigned computer for the semester. Failure to comply with lab and school rules will result in loss of privilege to use the computers.

Grading Policy
I. Grading procedures for each six week period: Exams and Major projects, 60%:
Students may have two per six weeks. Many major grades will be project based learning. Students will be graded on their mastery of the material.
II. Daily Work, Homework, or other assignments count 40%, up to six per grading period.
A. Quizzes: occasional quizzes to gauge students understanding before moving forward on more complex concepts.
B. Daily Grades: As assigned. These will be graded electronically and kept in student's electronic portfolio.
C. Warm-ups: will be checked randomly along with planner.
III. Lab Rules:
No food, drinks, or candy is allowed in the computer lab. No internet surfing, no inappropriate web material. No unapproved games. Students in violation will be kicked off the computers for one week and all assignments must be completed by hand. Continued offenders will be kicked off the computer indefinitely.
IV. Progress Reports
Students will be given progress reports three weeks into each six weeks grading period. Parents can also monitor grades via the Hays CISD website and the Parent Self-Serve. Student's grades will be posted weekly by their ID number. Students are to keep all returned materials in their electronic portfolio or folder.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
- Enter the lab quietly and go directly to your assigned workstation.
- Log In, copy into Daily Agenda, and begin the daily “Warm-Up” assignment
- At the end of class—UPON THE TEACHER’S INSTRUCTION—log off your computer, return materials where you got them from, push in your chair, and WAIT QUIETLY for the teacher to dismiss you from class.
- Tutoring will be offered everyday in the ICU room during lunch, before school at 7:45, or after school until 4:00.
